7 Geekentine Tips

Valentine's Day is a little over 24 hours away so there is little time to come up with an innovative gift for your partner. You can do the usual and make a last minute stop at Wal-Mart on the way home to rifle through the slim pickings at the flower shop, grab a not-quite-appropriate greeting card, and pick up the last of the heart shaped candy boxes, but, as a geek, you can do better.

Here are seven creative ways for you to use your geekiness to show how much you appreciate your significant other. They are listed in order of difficulty (in terms of planning and cost) from lowest to highest. By the way, I initially posted these in my Twitter stream, but I thought they would make a good blog post for people who don't follow me on Twitter.

#1. Remotely access your home computer and write a love note that your significant other will read when he/she logs in.

#2. Install a startup program that, when your significant other starts his/her laptop, plays a video of you praising him/her.

#3. Use PhotoStory to create a video tribute and post to Youtube. You can find one that I did for my wife a couple of years ago here.

#4. Hide small gifts around your partner's home/car/job/etc and send text message hints about where to find the next gift.

#5. Use Orb to create a streaming Internet audio playlist of your partner's favorite songs. This beats burning a CD.

#6. Video your partner's friends & family, edit it into a "This is Your Life" video, and rent out a movie theater to show it.

#7. Use ustream to live stream a video that your partner thinks is previously recorded and then suddenly appear and fly to Paris together.

I must admit that I have only used about half of these ideas, but I can attest that they worked wonders for my relationships! Using these tips will allow your significant other to truly appreciate the benefits of having a relationship with a geek!

  • Thanks, Anna and Nelson!
  • Wonderful ideas! Thanks.
  • Haha. Those are great. My favorite is #6; that would be awesome!
