Famous in Geekdom

The cult of Geek Celebrity is so strange to me. It is different from traditional Hollywood celebrity culture because these are not people who we see in movies or on television. They are people who have blogs with thousands of readers or alumni of dearly departed Tech TV. We don't see them on the read carpet, but we can follow them on Twitter/Jaiku/Pownce, watch their video productons, and read their online postings. I sometimes get more information through the course of the day about them than I get about my own wife.

So, what compels us to follow the geek elite? Everyone has an individual reason, but for me it is realizing that they are just like me. Leo Laporte has a wife and two kids just like I do. Kevin Rose grew up in a relatively small town just as I did. Veronica Belmont poured countless hours reading sci-fi/fantasy in the same way that I spent far too many hours inside with books instead of playing sports. They and the other talented few who have emerged to become certifiably "famous" let all of us know that we can all develop a voice that others want to hear. Perhaps one day my voice will contribute to the chorus.

  • I can appreciate that. I think that is one of the reasons so many people post blogs now. There seems to exist a need to express ourselves in a relatively anonymous, yet public way. I know when no one reads what I have written, I am a little disappointed. This is odd, because my blog is 'supposedly' mainly about having a place to put my thoughts. That others read them and comment on them should be icing on the cake. Yet more and more, I experience disappointment if no one comments.

So of course, I take that personal viewpoint and apply it to all bloggers in general. If I am like this, everyone else is too. Kidding, of course, but I do believe there is a fair amount of truth in that generalization, even if I have no proof.

I am here! I exist! Acknowledge my existence!

    I dunno really...

    But it's a good outlet.

  • Nelson,
I don't particularly desire riches, but I would to a certain degree appreciate a role representing Geeks to the masses. I have a draft post dealing with this that I will put up in the future, but being a techie has become almost cool. I partially credit Bill Gates who is the quintessential nerd, but he has somehow managed to become the richest man in the world.

I also don't particularly desire fame, but I would not fight against if it came with the territory of having a public forum to share my thoughts.
  • I have no real desire to be one of the rich and famous. Well, no real desire to be one of the famous: being rich would not be so bad, I think.

  • And maybe one day it's YOUR name people will set Google alerts for! :-)
