Tech News: Sprint Ahead

Sprint is rolling out a service that allows you to take calls using your home Wi-Fi connection.

Basically, if you are in range of your home wireless connection, the call will be routed via your internet service instead of over the Sprint network. Since most home have a stronger Wi-Fi signal than a cellular signal, this should solve the problem that many of us have with poor service in our homes. Furthermore, you are not charged minutes for call made over Airave.
I think this is a great service, and I will probably purchase it when they roll it out in the Houston area. I hope the service also allows me to use my Sprint data services (i.e. accessing the Internet on my cell phone) over the Airave.

There is one known caveat (out of many, I am sure many ones to come). If you start a call on the cell network and switch over to your wireless network, you are still charged minutes. So, you would have to restart the call to take advantage of the minutes saving feature.

I am sure that other carriers will roll out similar services since I think that this will be a hit. Now, if Sprint would only reverse the false charges on my bill, they may get off of my bad list a go to the top of my good list.
